Our New York-based lawyers have worked on many of the most significant business and legal developments of the past 150 years—from landmark court cases to the formation of major corporations and financial institutions to the development of innovative and important financial instruments.

Today our New York office is home to more than 75 percent of our lawyers and handles a significant portion of the work we do for our clients in the United States, as well as those around the world.

Our New York-based corporate lawyers work on the full spectrum of domestic and international transactions, often as part of an integrated team with colleagues from our other U.S. and overseas offices. Our Litigation, Tax and Trusts and Estates Departments are based predominantly in New York, though we also have litigators in Menlo Park and tax lawyers in both Menlo Park and London.

[edit] Law Student Summer Program

Davis Polk is committed to providing each summer associate with the best possible work experience. Summer associates are hired for our New York and Menlo Park offices.

Most of the summer associates who join our summer program are between their second and third years of law school. Recent law school graduates heading to judicial clerkships in the fall may also spend their summer at the firm.

We recruit primarily from the top of law school classes and judicial clerkships. We look for the highest academic and nonacademic achievement, initiative and a variety of backgrounds and talents. We strive to find exceptional lawyers who share our commitment to excellence and who will be collaborative and supportive colleagues.

Our lawyers will visit over 30 law schools and job fairs in fall 2008 to recruit summer and full-time associates. We strongly encourage qualified applicants at law school campuses that we are unable to visit to send their resumes and transcripts to our director of legal recruiting.

After preliminary interviews on campus, we invite the students we consider most qualified to New York or Menlo Park for further interviews. The firm reimburses for travel, hotel and meal expenses.

Second-round or call-back interviews are scheduled daily at 10:15 am, 10:30 am, 2:00 pm and 2:15 pm. An applicant can expect to meet with two partners and three or four associates. Students who schedule a morning interview are welcome to join two associates for lunch. The call-back interview usually takes between three to four hours.

Davis Polk’s recruiting committee, comprised of 13 partners, meets regularly during the fall recruiting season to make hiring decisions. To ensure fair and equal consideration of all applicants, we do not make on-the-spot offers. We will inform applicants of offers shortly after their callback interviews.

We encourage students with offers to come back to Davis Polk for a return visit to meet additional people and get answers to whatever remaining questions they may have about the firm. We will reimburse reasonable travel, hotel and meal expenses for a return visit.
