Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP
From Law Outlines Wiki & Law Firms Wiki - Law-Wiki.com
ThorntonGroutFinnigan LLP ("TGF") is a restructuring and litigation boutique firm founded in 1998 by Robert Thornton, James Grout and John Finnigan, each of whom were formerly partners in a large national law firm. Grant Moffat and D.J. Miller joined the partnership in 1999, Leanne Williams became a Partner in 2006, and John Porter joined the partnership of TGF in 2007. TGF's newest Partner, Michael Barrack, has added extensive litigation experience to the TGF team since joining the firm in 2008. TGF is the only restructuring and litigation boutique firm in Ontario recommended by The Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory, thereby acknowledging TGF's unique position in delivering top quality restructuring and litigation services to its clients.
Lawyers at the firm have been involved in virtually every major restructuring proceeding in Ontario over the past two decades. Members of the judiciary and colleagues at other firms recognize the partners in the firm as leaders in the field. Our restructuring lawyers have spent their entire careers practising exclusively in this area, and as a result, have developed specific expertise in topical and complicated issues of law. TGF has one of the largest restructuring practice groups in the country.
Leading financial institutions regularly retain our litigators to advance and protect their interest in contentious matters. While settlement is often the optimal solution, our litigators have the demonstrated skill, experience and determination to aggressively pursue their cases through trial and appeal.
TGF is a combination of experience and youth. As a focused boutique, TGF thrives on an entrepreneurial spirit. All lawyers are service-driven and strive to continuously raise the bar of professional excellence.

[edit] Practice Areas
The lawyers at TGF restrict their practice to insolvency and commercial litigation. All lawyers at TGF appear in court on a regular basis and, accordingly, it is not necessary to brief a new lawyer for a court appearance. The lawyer who negotiated the deal will appear as counsel to have it approved or defended. This functional efficiency translates to costs saved.
[edit] Litigation
Our litigation lawyers have a broad range of experience in commercial litigation. The litigation practice includes lender and product liability, tort claims including fraud, misrepresentation and negligence, contract and corporate disputes, shareholder disputes, competition law, securities and real estate litigation and professional negligence claims. Our lawyers appear as counsel at trial, on appeal and before a wide range of regulatory agencies and tribunals.
[edit] Restructuring
As a focused boutique, TGF is a leading insolvency and restructuring law firm. We have extensive experience in all areas of insolvency and banking law including restructuring, workouts, refinancings, receiverships, and bankruptcies. Our lawyers deliver practical and goal-oriented service in a fast-paced environment and are recognized as leading practitioners in the field. TGF has been involved in virtually every major insolvency proceeding in Ontario over the past fifteen years, a list that includes The Canadian Red Cross Society, Eatons, Cineplex Odeon, Livent, Bell Canada International, Teleglobe, Canada 3000, Parmalat, Air Canada, MuscleTech, Hollinger, JTI-Macdonald, and the largest restructuring recently concluded in Canada (Stelco) where TGF played a leading role in representing the Monitor. Our on-going retainers reflect our high profile within this practice area.

[edit] Clients
We provide value-added services to our clients at a competitive cost. Our primary client groups are: (i) financial institutions and other lenders; (ii) accounting firms; and (iii) other law firms who retain us as counsel. TGF regularly acts for three of Canada’s largest banks and one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. In recognition of our leadership in this field, the firm recently prepared and presented an extensive Training Manual covering all aspects of loan recovery and restructuring, for use by one of the largest banks in Canada. Members of the firm regularly assist our financial institution clients in their educational and training programs.
TGF also regularly acts for the “big five” accounting firms and other professional firms in their capacities as trustees in bankruptcy, court-appointed and privately-appointed receivers, receivers and managers, interim receivers and monitors. The lawyers at TGF have an excellent working relationship with these professionals due, in large part, to our ability to facilitate the effective delivery of these skills and services to the client.
Our reputation as a litigation and restructuring boutique firm has also resulted in numerous ongoing informal relationships with local tax, corporate, real estate and securities lawyers, and with other restructuring and litigation practitioners throughout North America and in Europe. TGF’s unique position in the Toronto legal community allows us to be both a significant source of referral work to other practitioners as well as a resource for practitioners looking to refer their clients or seek advice on discrete restructuring or commercial litigation matters. TGF respects the ongoing relationship between referring counsel and their clients.
